Short answer

5 Tennessee markets served from St. Louis, on a weekly lane. Distribution, automotive and whiskey. Tennessee splits into three unrelated container markets stretched across five hundred miles of state. Nearest market Memphis at 285 road miles; furthest Knoxville at 490. Free collection on 20+ units — this is inside the backhaul radius

What drives container demand in Tennessee

Tennessee is really three markets that happen to share a state line. Memphis is distribution and logistics at continental scale, with the chemical and industrial fluid demand that comes with it. Middle Tennessee around Nashville is automotive, food manufacture and the distilling industry. East Tennessee is chemical, energy and heavy manufacture with a different freight proposition entirely.

The distilling cluster is disproportionately interesting to us. Glycol loops, hot and cold liquor, spent grain and low wines are four different jobs needing three different grades plus stainless, and nearly everyone starts by buying one grade for all of it. We have saved distillery customers several hundred dollars on a first order simply by specifying each line separately.

Memphis is on a weekly lane and Knoxville is not, so the freight difference across the state is larger than the mileage suggests. The city pages carry their own numbers.

Freight into Tennessee

Indicative per-unit freight on empty 275 gallon totes, computed at this state's average 369 road miles. Your own city page carries its own numbers, because the spread between Memphis and Knoxville is larger than a state-wide figure can usefully express.

Diesel-sensitive and indicative. The shape of the curve is reliable; the absolute numbers move with fuel. Note that forty-eight units costs roughly a sixth per unit of what one unit costs — consolidating is worth more than any discount we could offer.

Climate and handling notes

High UV load. Two uncovered summers will chalk and embrittle an HDPE bottle at the shoulders, so budget for a fitted sleeve or site tanks in shade. Freeze risk is real but short.

Beyond that, the two things that actually kill containers in service are the same everywhere: standing water under the base frame, which corrodes galvanised tube from the underside where nobody looks, and forklift strikes to the lower cage rails. Get units off wet ground — a pair of reclaimed pallets costs nothing and adds years to a frame. See safety and stacking.

Tennessee questions

How long does delivery to Tennessee take?

1 – 2 business days to Memphis at 285 road miles, and 2 – 3 business days to Knoxville at 490 miles. Those are LTL transit figures after pick-up; add one to three business days for grading, washing and staging depending on the grade you order. Food-grade and rebottled units take longer because they are built to order rather than pulled from stock.

Will you collect empty totes from Tennessee?

Yes. Free collection on 20+ units — this is inside the backhaul radius Our trucks run a weekly lane into Tennessee, and because they would otherwise return to St. Louis empty, a collection on the return leg costs us the deviation and the loading time and almost nothing else. Stack four high with cages interlocked, drain and cap the valves, and keep food-history units separate from chemical-history ones — mixed stacks get graded down, which costs you money.

What grade do most Tennessee buyers actually need?

Distribution, automotive and whiskey. Tennessee splits into three unrelated container markets stretched across five hundred miles of state. In practice about a third of the enquiries we receive from any state are specified wrong, and roughly two in three of those are overspecified. Leave the grade field blank on the form and describe the product instead — the answer is usually cheaper than people expect.

Do I pay more for freight to Tennessee than someone closer to the yard?

The goods cost the same everywhere — grade bands do not move by geography. Freight does, and so do accessorials: liftgate ($95–$140), limited access for a farm or site ($75–$110) and residential delivery ($85–$120). We ask about your dock and forklift up front so those appear in the quote rather than on the invoice.

What about winter and sun damage in Tennessee?

High UV load. Two uncovered summers will chalk and embrittle an HDPE bottle at the shoulders, so budget for a fitted sleeve or site tanks in shade. Freeze risk is real but short.

Quoting Tennessee delivered, not ex-yard

Send a postal code, a quantity and whether you have a forklift. That is enough for a number that will match the invoice.
